Alton Primary Care Centre

“The residents are very pleased and the partnership between the GPs is working very well. It’s a real advantage to have community staff and primary care staff based together for the first time.” Carol Goodwin, PCT representative for North Staffordshire As an inspiring community-centred scheme, the Alton practice provides family health services for the village of Alton and the surrounding rural area. The primary care centre is situated in the breathtaking village of Alton, near Alton Towers, Staffordshire. The former premises comprised only 3 rooms – a reception and waiting area, dispensary and a consulting room. Serving 1,900 patients the surgery exhibited all the problems you would expect from a lack of space, therefore the challenge was to develop a building that would provide flexibility in terms of service provision, including community services. Working closely with the design team, Prima 200 developed a premises solution that would maximise space for the surgery without impinging on neighbouring community land. The scheme has delivered real and sustainable improvements in the health and wellbeing of local people and as well as GP services, provides a whole host of facilities and clinics – from phlebotomy and minor surgery to chronic disease management and GP

Audley Health Centre

“The health centre is one of the hubs of the community – it’s a big part of people’s lives here. Everyone’s delighted with it. The patients love it – they can’t quite believe it when they walk in… We struggled to offer extended services in the old building – now we’re able to provide them in the right settings. It’s what the patients in Audley deserve.” Julie Stokes Manager of Audley Medical Practice Welcoming, spacious and filled with natural light, Audley Health Centre provides an uplifting environment for patients and staff. Purpose-designed working areas have enabled an extended range of services to be provided, from community nursing, phlebotomy and physiotherapy to minor surgery and chronic disease management. Having attracted an additional 7% of the registered population after only nine months of operation, the centre has improved local access to services and created an environment that patients love. Opening hours have been extended to improve patient access and services such as physiotherapy are able to offer a wider range of care because of the improvement in facilities and equipment.

Biddulph Primary Care Centre

“It’s great to see how the centre will benefit the residents of Staffordshire and the staff who provide excellent health services from them. Absolutely everyone involved should be very proud of this achievement which will continue to help improve health services for residents in Biddulph and the surrounding areas.” Nick Pritchard, Local Area Team Co-ordinator, NHS Property Services Shropshire and Staffordshire Home to two GP practices and a host of primary and community care services, the centre offers speech and language therapy, midwifery and podiatry, as well as providing a base for community matrons and nurses. A shared space is also available, which can be used out-of-hours by community groups. Designed in close consultation with patients, staff and local residents, the centre’s contemporary design has been inspired by the local area and has already become an important landmark, symbolising a positive step in the regeneration of the town.

Cobridge Community Health Centre

“In the years ahead Cobridge Community Health Centre will do much to improve health and wellbeing, and it is a major benefit that we don’t just get a new clinic but a derelict site brought back into use and jobs for local people. Already the new clinic is making a difference and I am proud to have supported a great team of NHS professionals and local volunteers who made sure this clinic was built here to give new hope to Cobridge.” Joan Walley, Stoke-on-Trent North MP Incorporating a state-of-the-art community health centre and a purpose built sexual health unit, the scheme provides a range of specialist services, including a chest clinic and X-Ray facility, district nursing, health visiting teams and occupational therapy, offering patients the option to be treated outside of hospital. The combined Sexual Health Unit (SHU) and Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) brings together medical services, forensics and emotional support, allowing victims to receive the help and advice they need – all in one central location. Previously hospital amenities, these enhanced services are now offered within the heart of the community. Designed in consultation with patients, staff and local community groups, the community-led nature of the scheme has

Fenton Health Centre

“The set-up of the building is brilliant. We’ve got two practices running under the same roof as well as the community services and the pharmacy. Having all the services available on site is great for patients and they’re really impressed. It’s fantastic [as] we have the space to keep growing and developing services.” Linda Steele, Fenton Health Centre Manager One of the first schemes delivered by Prima 200, Fenton Health Centre accommodates two GP practices as well as a host of community services, from speech and language therapy and community nursing to minor surgery and phlebotomy. Three factors led to the birth of the new Fenton Health Centre. First, the two existing general practices serving the area occupied converted residential properties which suffered severe space restrictions and access problems. This made the development of new, fit-for-purpose premises a priority for the PCT. Second, an existing PCT-owned site was available for a new build and was conveniently located in the heart of the existing patient population. Third, the site’s prominent location offered the opportunity to clearly demonstrate the PCT’s long-term commitment to investing in modern local healthcare provision and the wellbeing of the community.

Hanley Health and Wellbeing Centre

“This new scheme required a whole new approach. The intelligent design and careful organisation meant the job was completed with very low stress levels and the result was absolutely fantastic. Our requirements – whilst perhaps a little demanding – were delivered beyond expectation.” Michelle Urwin, Senior Project Manager, Premises Development Team, NHS Stoke on Trent The £1.1 million refurbishment scheme was part of a Government cash injection to tackle deprivation and a shortage of GPs in the region. The development has seen the transformation of two derelict Victorian buildings, formerly home to a high street bank and retail unit, into a one-stop health centre that provides walk-in services to the local community 365 days a year. Patients are also able to access a range of complementary services such as screening for chronic diseases and advice on healthy living and smoking cessation. With time-limited government funding available, Prima 200 mobilised quickly and worked closely with NHS Stoke on Trent to build a strong business case for the scheme. Its support included service planning and undertaking a space utilisation review to ensure an efficient, value for money solution that would meet NHS Stoke on Trent’s clinical aims. The project was completed within

Hartshill Medical Centre

“The team supported us throughout the process, helping us to progress the business case, finalise the plans and shape the design. It’s been great having their experience and advice at hand.” Alison Challinor, Practice Manager, Hartshill Surgery Serving more than 6,300 registered patients, the £2.6 million exemplar medical centre was a GP-led scheme which provides new and improved accommodation for Hartshill Surgery, tailored to meet staff and patient needs. The new facility was part of NHS Stoke on Trent’s wider plans for the regeneration of the area and calls for expressions of interest from local GPs looking to improve their premises. Operating from a converted residential building with limited car parking and no room to expand, Hartshill Surgery submitted an application for developing a new purpose-built facility. With its case approved, the GPs were put in touch with Prima 200. By using the LIFT vehicle, they could remain in control of the design and development of the scheme, while benefitting from a pre-approved procurement route and the expertise of a specialist team. Designed in consultation with staff, patients and the local community, the single storey building comprises an onsite pharmacy, multi-purpose room and GP training facilities, while allowing space for

Meir Primary Care Centre

We have had a lot of positive feedback from our patients so far. It will greatly benefit the people of the local area as it is easily accessible and offers a wider range of services.” Joanne Ashcroft, Meir Primary Care Centre Manager Designed in consultation with patients, staff and members of the local community, the health centre typifies a new, more sustainable model of community healthcare. Home to several GP practices and a range of services including paediatrics, physiotherapy and sexual health advice, dental facilities and an out-of-hours pharmacy, the building’s innovative four-storey layout and mezzanine waiting area encourages integrated working for a more holistic approach. Benefitting from a central location at the ‘gateway’ to the city, the new facility has also contributed significantly to the regeneration of the local area. The design features a striking curved front façade, not only giving the centre prominence but complementing the building opposite, while the use of traditional red brick celebrates the heritage of the area. The building’s flexible design and layout has enabled its use as an out-of-hours community facility, supporting the desire of the local population for a community hub that, in addition to its focus on healthcare provision, can support

Middleport Medical Centre

“Residents have been fighting so long for this health centre we must make sure it is a success. The building itself is fantastic and in an ideal place, smack in the heart of Middleport with easy access for people with disabilities.” Local resident, Karen Broadhurst Developed by Prima 200 LIFT Company on behalf of NHS Stoke on Trent, the state-of-the-art Middleport Medical Centre received funding under the Equitable Access in Primary Care (EAPC) scheme and now provides primary care services in the heart of the community it serves. Prima 200’s work with NHS Stoke on Trent, local councillors, RENEW and North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership (NSRP) indicated significant need in Middleport and when the new centre opened, 350 patients registered in the first week, demonstrating the effectiveness of a partner with genuine local knowledge and a long term interest in the area. Working with the PCT and local authority colleagues, Prima 200 ensured this £3m project met the exceedingly tight timeframes required for delivery of the scheme. Despite identifying an alternative site only two weeks after the original planning application had been approved – which the PCT, local people, politicians and healthcare planners all preferred – it took just under 12

Mill Rise Village

“Having lived here for three years, I can certainly say that this is by far the best way I have seen of allowing people to remain truly independent, but having support on hand if it’s required. At the end of one’s life, there may well be a short time where you won’t be able to care for yourself and will have to rely on other people, but it’s important to keep that period to a minimum and places like Mill Rise allow this to happen.” Mike Reynolds Chairman of Mill Rise’s residents’ association When Milehouse Primary Care Centre in Newcastle under Lyme needed a new fit-for purpose building, Prima 200 was able to locate a perfect site for the new Primary Care scheme but it was part of an 11 acre redevelopment site and therefore was financially unviable for the small 1,622 sqm centre. The team at Prima 200 needed to identify a third party that would be a complementary occupier to the GP and community trust services. Using market knowledge and local contacts Prima 200 began talks with Aspire Housing, a Registered Social Landlord, about the feasibility of incorporating an extra care element in to the development. Packmoor Primary Care Centre

“We had a really good relationship with the Prima 200 team. They were very good, answered all our questions and always attended the operational meetings. We continued to have meetings during the build period and they kept us updated with all that was going on.” Packmoor Primary Care Centre Practice Manager, Fran Wilshaw The residents of Packmoor were excited when the PCT decided to set up a brand new general practice in their village – so much so, 600 new patients registered within the first month of its opening. As the practice was operating from a temporary building, permanent accommodation was a necessity and Prima 200 helped to realise that vision, working with GPs and patients to create a bespoke centre for the whole community. The design of the new single storey building is based on an L shaped plan – one wing being dedicated to clinical services and the other to administration. Reception is located where the two wings meet and is the one part of the building which is double height. This, along with the use of extensive glazing, gives the entrance and waiting areas a spacious feel. Red brick exteriors echo the local vernacular while a gull-wing

Shelton Primary Care Centre

“We’re already able to offer a wider range of health services locally, including a diabetes service that will save many patients a trip to the acute hospital. I think local people really do appreciate the fact they’ve now got a high quality building and a very pleasant public open space close to where they live.” Ian Gibson, NHS Stoke on Trent Set in the heart of a regeneration zone, this landmark three storey centre serves one of the country’s most deprived communities. The £4.5 million integrated primary care centre accommodates two GP practices and offers an extensive range of diagnostic, screening and health education services, along with a number of outpatient clinics to reduce the need for hospital visits. Located on the site of a former pottery factory and adjacent to a section of the Caldon canal, Prima 200 worked closely with British Waterways, Stoke City Council, the local community and regeneration agency, RENEW North Staffordshire to deliver a scheme that would embrace the canal-side setting. Following detailed consultation, the building has not only improved access to local health and social care services but has incorporated the waterway into the scheme, creating an attractive public open space and restoring confidence
